What is a HorseBack Safari?

Reference:

A superb and exhilarating way to see wildlife..... A horseback safari through the Okavango Delta is an unparalleled experience.

Horse Safaris operate in a private concession - Macatoo, the Horseback Safari Camp, is situated on the western side of Okavango Delta bordering on Moremi Game Reserve. This vast inland delta, lies like an glittering jewel on the edge of the great Kalahari desert, a maze of papyrus lined waterways, meadows and woodland rich in birdlife and game.
Elephant, buffalo, plains game, lion, leopard and cheetah all thrive in the delta area and there is a good chance of viewing all from horseback.

On horseback you can venture further into the delta and get closer to the wildlife than you can on foot. The wild animals treat you as though you are part of the scenery, just another animal in their domain.

Rides take a maximum of 7 guests. Weight limit is 95kgs. Non-riders can be accommodated, non-riders have their own guide and enjoy game drives, walks and mokoros. They move with the riding clients to the various fly camps and join non-riding activities and picnics.

Trips can be tailor made to suit you and the number of nights you would like to travel. Please note: We have safaris for 5, 7 and 10-night itineraries. Shorter safaris are also available year round - please enquire for further details.

You will ride during the day, in the cooler times, and move each day to a different camp. You will spend 4-6 hours in the saddle each day with breaks for snacks and lunch.
Guests must have proficient riding abilities, particularly to be able to gallop. Children - 12 years and older - are allowed if proficient riders. A variety of Thoroughbreds, Namibian Hanovarians, Arabs and Kalahari-Arabs crosses, ranging from 14 - 16.2 hands (140-165cm). The horses are well-schooled, responsive and even temperament. Every effort will be made to match horse and rider.

All rides are lead by qualified profession guides. A 375 rifle is carried on all the rides. All camps and vehicles have radio communication and guides ride with a hand held radio. A demonstration is given at the beginning of the safari with a talk on how to handle big game situations. A keen interest is taken in birds as well as fauna & flora.

Trip Highlights:

• Experience the wildlife of the Okavango at a closer level as the animals regard the horses to be more natural than vehicles
• Amazing scenery and riding territory
• Classic safari camp atmosphere in beautiful locations
• Horse riding in the African bush

A horse safari is a unique experience for those who would enjoy the pleasures of long distance riding with a love for the wild and the thrill of an African safari...
