Each year the Okavango River in western Botswana plays host to one of Africa`s finest sport fishing spectacles... the catfish run. Anytime from mid September through to mid November the delta`s barbel congregate in immense numbers and a mass upstream pilgrimages occurs. The driving force behind this behaviour is commonly believed to be the need to spawn. Also thought that the falling water levels
send millions of barbel on this upstream breeding migration. The Barbel prey on smaller fish and literally flatten the papyrus with their vast numbers. For the anglers that experience such a run, the fly fishing is incredible.
Catfish are strong and stubborn fighters, but at this time of year the very visible catfish runs are followed by schools of voracious tigerfish, which snap up whatever escapes the barbel. Tiger fish are known for their ferociousness and great fighting abilities and are very difficult to hook due to their razor sharp teeth and bone filled mouths.

Botswana offers excellent fishing opportunities for lovers of nature and the outdoors.
