What are Walking Safaris?

A walking safari in Africa and particulary Botswana is regarded as one of the finest ways to explore the wilderness.
A real Bush experience.

Walking safaris appeal to all with an adventurous mind, keen on a learning experience. Every walk is an adventure, with the emphasis on all the wonders of nature, big and small. Due to the danger aspect of a walking safari, the minimum age is 16. Although there is no maximum age, the walks can last up to 4 hours and tracking might lead the trail through thick bush and riverbeds.

It goes without saying that all walking safaris are accompanied by specialized professional walking guides. Walking Safari guides have to undergo pretty intensive education and testing. Your Professional Guide regards your safety as his/her primary concern. Under all circumstances any lawful instructions issued by your guide must be strictly applied.
The walking guides are totally familiar with the area and environment in which they operate and have both formal training and experience with game found in the area.

The first step in planning a walking safari is to decide on the type of safari that suits you best.
The following summary offers some explanation of the differences between:
• `backed up` walking safaris and
• trails from fixed bases (tented camps, seasonal camps and lodges)

The `backed up` walking trails normally follow a specific walking route through a wilderness area to rendezvous points en route where overnight camps have been established by a support team. These trails focus on specific wilderness areas known for their remoteness, natural beauty and/or particularly good wildlife.

We can recommend the following `backed up` walking safari:
The Selinda Trail in the Selinda Reserve. A four to six day walking safari for up to six guests utilising the Motswiri, Zibalianja and Selinda camps. A great way to explore the Linyanti.

Tented camps, bush camps and lodges serve as fixed bases from which walking trails are conducted. These bases are located in areas of beauty, blending in with the bush and terrain. All are within simple reach of areas that have big game elephant, buffalo, antelope and smaller mammals which are fairly common residents at most of these camps.
Walking safaris normally take place in the early mornings and evenings when game is more active. Vehicles are often used to get within closer reach of areas where game is more prolific.

We can recommend the following walking trails from fixed bases:
Jacks Camp, Selinda, Chitabe, Footsteps across the Delta

We at The Booking Company have put together some popular itineraries. We can also tailor make an itinerary to suit your specific requests or needs.
